Top Time Wasters At The Workplace And Why They Should Be Avoided

Many people complain of too much workload in office and how it seems to never end .This affects their personal life and leads to frustration .However ,many workers do not realise that they themselves are responsible for this problem since they do not manage their time efficiently at the workplace .They indulge in a number of unproductive and time wasting activities during the day , not utilising the regular work hours properly . With offices providing facilities like ultracool cafeterias to hang out ,unrestricted net access ,employees tend to get distracted .
Here are some top timewasters at the workplace

and why we should avoid them as much as possible :

1)Long tea,coffee or smoke breaks
No one can work continously at a stretch for eight - nine hours and thus a fifteen minute coffee or snack break is justified once or twice a day . It also helps you to interact in an informal manner with your collegues and is necessary to reduce the stress associated with work . However ,many workers are in the bad habit of extending these breaks beyond the acceptable fifteen twenty minutes .They hang out in the cafeteria or smoke room gossiping ,reading newspapers etc . This is one of the top time waster at office.

Reason it should be avoided :
Indulging in such activities act like an unnecessary distraction at work . They simply waste your time and break your flow . Plus ,if you are seen hanging outside your work bay too often ,it creates a negative impression amongst your team and superiors .And ,office gossip of course ,can be very dangerous .

2)Gossiping in office
It is a misnomer that only female workers indulge in office gossip. Many times ,male workers too are seen hanging near their friends' cubicles ,distracting themselves as well as others .Gossiping should be avoided in office and should be restricted to casual chit chat .If one must necessarily socialize and catch up with their office mates ,it should be done after office hours or over a weekend lunch or get together .

Reason it should be avoided :
Fritting away precious work hours simply gossiping and complaining about your work chores at home, parents in laws and bad boss is a bad idea !! Additionally ,most times people tend to end up in dangerous and sticky situations when they gossip about workplace

related issues ,team mates etc .For example ,you may have made a very harmless joke about your boss to your friends ,without intending to mean any harm .It
might be overheard by a teammate ,who jealous of your abilities and merits ,can twist it around and report it in bad terms to your boss .This would obviously spoil your good relationship with your superior .

3)Net surfing
Nowadays all businesses require Internet and thus Internet facilities to employees are
provided almost in all companies .Unrestricted Internet usage however comes with its own cons .Most employees tend to misuse it by spending too much time in social networking ,downloading non official material like songs from the Internet and spending hours browsing for information such as planning their next holiday etc .

Reason it should be avoided :
Using the Internet once or twice a day to check mails is acceptable .However ,using it to change your Facebook status every hour isn't !! Employees must learn to draw their own line regarding Internet usage at the workplace .Also ,at most big offices like offices of software companies ,Internet use is administered to a certain extent and the IT department may have access to your personal mails ,personal data on your desktop etc .
Thus one needs to very careful regarding Internet usage .

4)Taking personal calls at workplace
It's a common sight to see and hear many employees talking endlessly on their mobiles and work phones while at work .This is a major time killer and causes disturbances to others around them also .

5)Spending too much time in the restrooms
While it is a good practice to have a neat and appealing appearance at the workplace ,many workers spend too much time fussing over their looks in front of the mirror in the office restroom . Office restrooms are also seen as areas to catch up on gossip and have " private talks " with their friends ,often causing lots of inconvenience to other co workers besides wasting their own time .

These are some top time wasters at office and should be avoided as much as possible .Time is a precious resource indeed nowadays and needs to be judiciously used .
